A note from the co-directors:
Coming Together was created in collaboration with 5 incredible ensemble members: Julia Corrigan, Beth Kaiserman, Jonathan Plotkin, Adina Polen, and Naomi Ribner. Located across the country from Boston to Berkeley, this dedicated ensemble each brought their own artistry to the process of creating this theatrical piece. We all come from different professional backgrounds and each carry our own flavors of Jewish identity, much of which you will see reflected throughout the plays. And we have also been so lucky to work with a wide array of community members to perform these scenes, many of whom are making their acting debuts on our virtual stage. Our show’s theme is about community building and we are so grateful for the strong communities that have emerged from its creation.
The process of creating this show began in October 2020, when Rebecca Powell and Sarah Plotkin co-facilitated a series of free storytelling workshops around the theme of Jewish community building during the pandemic. All of the ensemble members participated in those workshops, as well as about 30 others, and it was through these workshops that we realized how truly exciting and important it felt to explore this theme in depth.
What followed was a collaborative visioning process, in which we invited anyone who attended a workshop to imagine together what a show about Jewish community-building during COVID, created virtually by people across the country, would look like. And after many months, that visioning process has led to this show. Coming Together encompasses a series of five short plays, using interviews with people in our communities, storytelling and writing prompts, improvisation and music.
