Matt (lip syncing Tom Waits): “This is a uh, a song for those of you in the audience who have trouble getting up on sunday morning and going to church. I’ve discovered something um, that’s a candy item, um it’s actually an immaculate confection, it’s a, there’s a cross on one side and there’s a bible description on the other. You put it in your mouth, and when it’s gone you can get up and leave. It’s a... but this is something for the kids on, uh, Easter. This is... called the chocolate Jesus.”
Sonia, Elena and Shane walk on, Sonia begins dance with Matt while Elena and Shane do back up dancer moves.
Elena: Is she a bitch? Is she a bird? I don’t know sometimes. Can she be both? I don’t know sometimes.
Sonia: Often, something, often, something, often, something about theater makes me think about certain people as limitless creative entities. And when, when you, you know, someone in that way you really start to admire them and you (well, I) want to be close with them.
Shane: Ten to ten. Ten to ten. Sun up, sun down. Her face. Her…attitude. You get to know it, you get to live it. It’s awful, but it’s beautiful. Berating me and tormenting me with her ways all damn day.
Elena: Have you ever performed for children?
Matt: Yes, god help me.
Elena: What are your thoughts on matinees?
Matt: I mean, you know, whatever. If we have to.
Elena: Have you ever hooked up with someone from a show?
Matt: Yes.
Matt: Sometimes…Summer…is like a treat. Like delicious candy that rots your insides. When we’re together, it’s like summertime. But the living ain’t so easy…This is a song for the lovers, for love is a beautiful thing. The bed hoggers, the bed givers. The lonely nights and the peaceful afternoons. It’s the thing that gets you higher than anything else…until it hits you in the fucking teeth.
Everyone: What would it be like to just stop being?
Matt: I’ll go make some tea.
